![]() When your 2-year-old gets revved up and borders on losing control, try saying, "Let's take a time-out to read a book until we feel better." Any quiet activity, such as listening to music, lying down, or putting together a simple puzzle will work. Most 2-year-olds just aren't ready for solitary time-outs, so introduce the idea of time-out by taking a "positive" one together. The goal of a time-out is to defuse and redirect an escalating situation in an unemotional way, and to help your child behave without setting a negative example, the way yelling does. Although at times it may require superhuman effort, try not to scold, yell, or speak angrily when you call "time-out" – the point isn't to chastise your child, it's simply to help her switch gears. Instead, think of it as an opportunity to teach your child how to cope with common frustrations and modify her behavior. If you don't think of a time-out as punishment, neither will your child, and that's as it should be. Six strategies for making the most of this technique with your child: What to doĭon't think of it as punishment. These are moments to connect with your child when the world has overwhelmed him. Many experts are skeptical about using traditional time-outs, especially with a child this young. Two-year-olds find it hard to sit still, so trying to make your little one stay in one place for a prescribed length of time may well disintegrate into a chase scene or an escalating power struggle. Talk with your pediatrician for more ideas. When your child gets too worked up for her own good, sometimes the best way to help her get a handle on herself is to remove her from whatever sparked the meltdown (or the limits-pushing) in favor of a little quiet time. Try other positive ways to correct your child's behavior. But, remember, time-outs can be used too much. Like with all discipline tools, the key is trying to use time-outs the same way each time for the behavior you want to stop. Grandparents and other caregivers can learn how time-outs work, too. When you feel calm, go hug your child and start fresh. Then, do something you find relaxing, like listening to music, reading or meditation. First make sure your child is in a safe place, like a playpen, crib, or bedroom. If you start to feel stressed or out of control, you can take a time-out for yourself. Adults can take time-outs, too.Ĭorrecting a child's behavior can be hard and, sometimes, frustrating. This strategy also works well for older children and teens. You can just say, "Go to time out and come back when you feel ready and in control." This can take the place of the timer and help the child learn and practice self-management skills. ![]() With children who are at least 3 years old, parents can try letting their children lead their own time-out. Explain that he needs to "stay put" until it's over. If she throws a tantrum during time-out, ignore it unless there is danger of harm.Ħ. If your child leaves the time out area, have her go back. Start the timer-1 minute for each year of age. Have your child go to a quiet place, like a corner of a room, not the bedroom or a play room.Ĥ. Warn your child first, "If you don't stop, you'll have a time-out."Ģ. The basics of a time-out-by the numbers:ġ. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Giving a child a time-out can be a useful tool to help them cool down and learn good behavior. ![]()
![]() But really, all of these are focused almost solely on text and lack the ability to let you intelligently organize things. Things like Evernote, Microsoft OneNote, even Apple’s built-in Notes App and newer takes such as Roam Research. Harlan Hugh: There are now a lot of note-taking applications that are scratching at the surface of what we endeavor to do. Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game? I would say the worst part about this change is that the social connections we all enjoyed as a team are suffering, but we do our best with virtual meetings. Like a lot of companies, generally, we have switched to remote work. We are putting in extra efforts to keep up with growth, and in fact, we are actively hiring. The recording of this event, and example, Brains to browse, can be found at. In fact, we recently hosted a webinar on this topic with two high-profile Brain users. We also have a number of users who are working specifically on digital brains to develop new solutions and do pandemic planning. TheBrain helps people by linking together networks of information visually so it can be understood and shared more easily. Harlan Hugh: Our userbase is growing since more people are working remotely and looking for effective ways to organize, communicate, and collaborate. How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping? You have to invest in long-term foundational technologies that will be potential game-changers. It is often tempting to focus on fulfilling requests based on demand, but ironically I believe doing this exclusively or even primarily leads to stagnation. We are fortunate to have a strong user community that does not hesitate to tell us what they want. ![]() Once you have a product out there, I think one of the key challenges is striking a balance between doing what your customers ask and giving them what they don’t necessarily know they want. Another example is our primary user interface, which leverages animation techniques that are common in video games and employs them in a productivity application. For example, the core premise of our system combines the principle of a social network with notes that are typically stored in a linear fashion. Harlan Hugh: One aspect of innovating is in combining existing technologies in unique ways. The software lets you connect all your digital content in a way that makes sense to you and presents it in an interactive visual graph with powerful note-taking and file syncing capabilities so that you can have access to anything at any time. So, with that in mind, I looked for a better metaphor for organizing information, and the brain was an obvious choice. Likewise, when you think about a project, you might also think of the various tasks within that project, the stakeholders, budget, and so on. When you think about a person, you might also think of the place they work, who they know, who introduced you to them, the projects they are working on, and so forth. Real-world information is connected in networks of associations, and this is how you think. The human mind is capable of so much more… Intricate relationships can never be expressed by the hierarchies that folders impose. It occurred to me that the metaphors used in computer user interfaces were at the core of the issue – desktops, files, and folders are not exactly the most inspiring and flexible ways of organizing information. Since I was a child, I always thought that most people underestimated the power of computers to change the way they think and work. Harlan Hugh: I am a self-taught software designer and programmer. Tell us about you, your career, how you founded TheBrain Technologies. As a result of the crisis, we have had to make some major adjustments to help close relatives who have been adversely affected quite dramatically by the social restrictions put in place to slow the spread. Harlan Hugh: We are doing well, all things considered. First of all, how are you and your family doing in these COVID-19 times? We talked to Harlan Hugh of TheBrain Technologies about organizing information like the brain.
